I had a one week break after Loudon before the June 22,23 AMA/CCS Club race at Summit Point. CCS likes to refer to their races as Pro/Am, but since they aren't paying a purse in Heavy Weight SuperTwins I'll continue to refer to them as club races. My wife decided to join me at the track this weekend and that was an added treat. It was decidedly laid back because I wasn't planning to go after the regional SuperTwins title. Practice went well Saturday morning, and since I wasn't signed up for any races that afternoon, we were able to cruise around on our bicycles and enjoy ourselves. This was one of those perfect weekends at the track, where I didn't even have to open the tool box, except to change carb jets. My new Raceco 90mm pistons were working perfectly, and with the right jetting the motor was running real strong. It started raining Saturday night and I was then beginning to regret leaving my rain tires at home. I had told myself that I wasn't going to risk anything for a club race, with the next pro race 2 weeks away. I figured that without rain tires, I wouldn't be tempted to race in the rain. It rained all during sunday morning practice and I wisely choose to no take any laps. Many of the other Twins competitors were running around having rain tires installed, and I almost went home, but then I told my wife, lets hang around and see what happens. Well it got progressively clearer, and the sun broke out just before our race. We were the fourth race of the day and the wind and other races ahd dried the track considerably. Only myself and one other racer were on slicks, the guys with rain tires, without enough time to change back to slicks, were scrambling to pump more air in their tires so they wouldn't overheat. While taking the warm up lap, I realizes the track was in good shape, with minimal mud, only one puddle, and one small stream crossing. I was on the front row, and got the hole shot. I never saw another competitor again until I started lapping the back markers near the end of the race. Crossing the stream with the front slick was real fun as it was at the entrance of a turn, and you were slightly leaned over, the front end would slide across each time, and then very predictably, grab once you were past. Also in the race was the 888 Ducati of Devin Battley. Devin had the rain tires that he used to good measure the week before at the Loudon Pro race, where he beat me. This week he had the rain tires on again and had a professional video team there to tape the race. The whole race I expected him to come by, but he never did. I found out later, all that tire changing had caught up with him and he had left his front axel pinch bolts loose, causing a bad wobble. I sure would like a copy of that video tape he comissioned! Devin was in the points lead in the Mid Altlantic region, but I have now taken that spot. At the beginning of the season, I wasn't going to try for the regional twins title, as I figured I had enough going on with defending my National Vintage title and the Pro stuff. There are 2 more Mid Atlantic races, and I wouldn't miss them for the world.
