WERA Regional, Road Atlanta, Braselton, Georgia, March 23 and 24 1996. Made a quick trip down to Road Atlanta this past weekend. Worked on Friday and drove to the South Carolina/Georgia border after work (~8 hours). Finished the trip Saturday morning. Made both practice sessions, and they went well despite cool temps. It was beginning to look like one of those weekends where I wouldn't touch the tool box. I safety wired my exhaust springs as per the tech inspectors instructions, set my tire pressures and added gas, and thats all I did to the bike all weekend. I entered Vintage 4, Vintage 5 and the LightWeight Endurance race. In Vintage 4 this year they now score the 4 strokes separately from the 2 strokes, good for me. I came in 7th overall, but 2nd in the 4 Stroke class. An old fellow Dr. Levine on an SRX (now legal for V4) beat me. We will have to see if his bikes running gear (Marvics and 4 piston brakes) stands up to legal scrutiny later in the year! In Vintage 5 I came in 6th after being balked by someone pulling off onto pit road from the racing line. 2 folks got past me in that incident. Although its not clear that they wouldn't have come past anyway. And finally in the last race of the day, LightWeight Endurance I came in 9th. This was good race as I was just about the first non-4 cylinder Japanese bike. I left the track not knowing how I finished as I was in a hurry to get to my sisters house and chat with her husband before he had to go to work. I was beginning to feel run down, work had been kicking my butt for the past 2 weeks and my racing life style also is quite draining. I was beginning to feel a slight cold coming on. Saturday night I relaxed in their hot tub soothing those aches and pain that a good day at the track brings. Then later I did some star gazing and viewed the comet with some binoculars. Sunday came around and I woke up with a sore throat. My original plan was to run two races Sunday and split, getting home around mid-night and working a regular schedule Monday at work, I knew that would be tough since I wasn't in perfect health. I got to the track, and ran morning practice, no surprises there, there was however only one session, because Road Atlanta has a locally mandated 2.5 hour quite time between 10am and 12:30 on Sundays. I wasn't too keen on waiting 5 hours for a couple of 15 minute races later in the afternoon, arriving home all burned out. I went up to registration to find out how far back in the finishing order they were paying the purse for the Endurance race. I was told I had won $50 for my 9th place finish. At that point I decided to quit while I was ahead. I packed up and split and made it home at a decent hour without making my cold any worse. It was a good weekend, I got some valuable points, didn't spend a ton of money, got quality track time and got to see some family. My little Guzzi ran like a top, my plan is to install my Lario motor before my next race in three weeks. See you at the track.
